While watching TV this week I sketched this young woman in my journal and colored her with my pencils. I discovered that some of my pencils are Prismacolor Verithin and some are Prismacolor Scholar. I'll have to say I like the sharp points of the Verithin, but the Scholar puts down a richer color. You can tell I know nothing about colored pencils. LOL! I thought my girl has a central or south American look about her. On Friday she will be entered into the Paint Party Friday challenge.
Edit: I have copied this sketch and given the copy a darker background. Please let me know if you think the dark background would be better. I can still work with the original.

Hi Faye..wowness..you did this while watching tv?..brilliant!!..she is truly beautiful..and it feels like there is such a radiance from within her..and illumination all around her..almost like candlelight..or the sun draping around her..so powerful! I love the shape and soft structure of her face..the way her eyes are gazing is also very mysterious and wonderfully appealing..marvelous!

ReplyDeleteThey are both great in different ways. The black brings out the colours more, so perhaps the first one only needs a gentle shade for the background. But I would be be happy with both as they stand, beautiful!

ReplyDeleteThe darker background does provide interesting contrasts that makes me see and appreciate her features better. But I agree with someone above that black is maybe too dark. Beautiful pencil work!
ReplyDeleteshe is a lovely girl...looking very serious! I once had an art instructor who told me there is no black in nature...that my darks should be made from dark brown and/or complimentary colors. I learned to add purple or blue to my dark browns to give them a richer darker feel without being artificially black. (but I still love black!)Try it out on scrap paper and see what you think... great job...happy PPF!

She turned out wonderful! I like her on the black background as she just pops right off the page. I have a large assortment of Prismacolor premier pencils that I received with my art kit when I was taking a graphic design class, I had no idea how expensive they were! And here I was letting my friend's daughter play with them lol.

ReplyDeleteI don't work with colored pencil very often, but somehow I am not a big fan of the Prismacolor. I can't really put my finger down why not. I recently found the Lyra Rembrandt colored pencils and like those.
you are really good at portraits faye. love the face and her expression and the colors too! I prefer the first one better with a bit of texture or slighter darker version. Hugs!

ReplyDeleteI have used colored pencils too.. they are fun to use but all put down color different. Now I am into watercolors but it was fun using them. You did a great job. I think I like the first one better as it goes with how you did the rest of her colors. HPPF
ReplyDeleteshe is definitely a lovely girl, and def. looks south american, round face & all. That is the one beef I always have with coloured pencils - can never seem to get them as dark as one might like - so saying, I feel that the dark bachground gives a nice solid frame/contrast to the lightness of the pencils
