Old and New

This just appeared on my Face Book, from an entry 4 years ago.

I barely remember painting it and I don't know where it is. I hope

it is just buried underneath a lot of my other paintings.

And these photos below are of my acrylic painting to go above 

my den sofa. It is 4' x 2' and will be giving the room a new look.
I have moved the lamp to the other side to balance things.

And here is a cartoon sketch I made showing

a shopper making a mad dash to be an early shopper

at our area's new Wegman's grocery store.

Japanese style painting

This week Masayo and I did some Japanese type painting on rice paper with our Sumi-e kits. Hers, she has had for a while since she spent her first 25 years in her native Japan. She has been here long enough to be truly American in culture, so neither of us knew how to do this Sumi-e thing. We watched a video to learn. Here are my attempts. When I scanned the images I got some shadowy bamboo that I didn't paint. A mystery. The rice paper is very thin. The scanner picked up bamboo leaves and reproduced them, I guess. My sumi-e kit was something my dh brought home from one of his many business trips to Japan. I just found it in a drawer a few weeks ago! Included in the box was, what Masayo explained to me,  my own personal signature stamp. She read it. It says my last name in Japanese. (see tiny red circle)

WAIT!!!

Those extra bamboo leaves are the wrinkles in the rice paper!

LOL!  

Next we tried to copy on rice paper a painting I had

made earlier. Painting with watercolors on rice paper

is a unique experience!

Then I tried to do some Japanese type painting on watercolor paper

 but I couldn't get the delicate look I wanted.
